After graduating from Hiram in 1983, I worked as a
software programmer for a few years. Other things were happening in my
life during this time – babies. Turns out I just didn't want to be a
programmer.
I was an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant for about 5
years. I really enjoyed that, but it wasn't a full time career.
I worked as a paraprofessional librarian at Middlefield Library and at
Parkman BP during the same time period. (another 5 years)
If someone was to ask me what my favorite job was, it would be working at
Parkman BP. I learned more at that job, than at any other job since. It
was a great place to work and I will always be grateful for having had the
opportunity to work there. I was also in Grad School during part of this
time.
I received a Masters in Library Science in 1994. Next I worked as the Head
of Reference at Carnegie Public Library in East Liverpool for a few years.
During this time the State of Ohio brought the “Internet” to the public
libraries. We setup a network and brought in computers. The computers
brought the kids in. The library underwent a very noisy, fantastic change.
The youth at Carnegie taught me what being poor is really all about. I
truly enjoyed my time there working with the kids. It was there were I
learned to stick to my principles keeping all information available to
everyone.
A great job opportunity appeared on the horizon and now I am in Ashtabula.
I am the Technology Coordinator for the Council of Ashtabula County
Libraries. I have been here since 1998.
In the
meantime I have some passions to fill my life: quilting, vegetable
gardeing, herb gardening, practicing self sufficiency, and of course
making friends with all of the neighborhood kids. (They like eating things
from my yard )
Someday I hope to move south again and live near some hills – or
mountains. Ashtabula is just too darn flat. Of course it makes traveling
in the snow much easier!
